R L Geisman | Advertising Design
While a graduate student at Harvard, I took almost an entire year off. parlyiing a summer temp job, to become the acting administrator of the university’s then largest research program: the Solar Satellite Project at the Harvard College Observatory. interacting with both staff and the university’s senior management.
I served 20+ years as an ordained Presbyterian minister, working first as a Resident in Pastoral Care at a Yale teaching hospital. In New Hsaven I learned to listen closely as I worked with children and parent in a pediatric oncology unit. As a pastor specifically with congregations in serious trouble, I continued to understand what people said and what they really meant. I began work in advertising with a strong desire to have more creativity and fun in what I was doing. That has never changed.
Only in advertising can you become an entry-level vice president. Working with the then most creative ad agency in Salt Lake City, running their west coast office I began as a “suit.” I learned both the business side of a creative organization as well as what it takes to relate to and exceed the needs of clients. As a high school student I was in one of the most demanding art programs in the country, I had a burning desire to be on the creative side of things, so I opened my own studio. "I can do this" I thought and rented space from another experienced designer—who kept me out of trouble.
On my own, I developed a business around my passion for sailing and slowly built my design business around the sailboat industry, eventually having more sailboat builders and marine product clients than any other agency in the country.
Today, my design clientele is a diverse mixture. It has ranged from one-person start-ups to an entire division of a Fortune 500 company. It is a mix clients in the creative fields (a well-respected composer) to clients in medical technology and a little bit of everything in between, even a group of family-owned Vietnamese restaurants. I very much enjoy the challenge that the diversity of my current client-base requires.
